To God be the Glory
Words by Fanny J. Crosby, 1875 (1820-1915)
Music by William H. Doane (1832-1915)
To God be the glory, great things he hath done!
So loved he the world that he gave us his Son,
who yielded his life an atonement for sin,
and opened the lifegate that all may go in.
Refrain
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
let the earth hear his voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father thru Jesus the Son,
and give him the glory, great things he hath done!
O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood,
to every believer the promise of God;
the vilest offender who truly believes,
that moment from Jesus a pardon receives.
Refrain
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
let the earth hear his voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father thru Jesus the Son,
and give him the glory, great things he hath done!
Great things he hath taught us, great things he hath done,
and great our rejoicing thru Jesus the Son;
but purer, and higher, and greater will be
our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see.
Refrain
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
let the earth hear his voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father thru Jesus the Son,
and give him the glory, great things he hath done!
Although Fanny Crosby was American, this hymn, To God Be the Glory, became popular in England (through the evangelist Ira Sankey's use of it) before it was widely known here. The only hymnal in America to use it for many years was the Seventh-day Adventist hymnal! Billy Graham, on a crusade in England in 1952, discovered the song, and brought it back with him to America, where it has finally achieved its deserved popularity in its country of birth. The tune was composed by a close friend of Ms. Crosby, William Howard Doane, who has ten tunes in our hymnal.
